Eating Disorders

Introduction

Eating disorders have become a huge problem in our society today. Eating disorders affect both males and females, but the majority are teenage females. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Even though these disorders are psychological, the mind and body require professional medical treatment. The reason I am doing this web page is for a school project and hopefully I can make people aware of this serious problem.

Anorexia/Bulimia Nervosa
ANOREXIA NERVOSA is when a person slowly starves themselves. It usually begins around the time of puberty. It occurs mostly with females. As many as 8 out of 10 adolescent females are fighting an unhealthy battle with food that could destroy their emotional and physical well-being, and ultimately lead to full-blown eating disorder. When the girls lose weight they lose at least 15% of their normal body weight. The strange thing about women with Anorexia Nervosa is that they continue to think that they are overweight even though they can be very thin.

Symptoms:

Significant weight loss.
Focus on "good" foods and "bad" foods.
Dramatically reduces fat in diet.
Makes statements indicating the perception of being over weight(though thin).
Verbally denies being hungry.
Skips meals and may also purge food.
Engages in food rituals, such as cutting food into small pieces, leaving food on plate, eating very slowly.
Engages in excessive exercise.
Develops other rituals, such as having difficulty changing pen colors when note-taking, rigid schedule.

BULIMIA is when a person consumes a large amount of food (binging)and later vomits (purging). Bulimia is called the binge and purge disease.
In women,Bulimia is more common than Anorexia Nervosa. Most of the time when the women want to induce vomiting they shove their fingers down their throat. Many use laxatives or diuretics. Taking enemas or exercising excessively.

Symptoms:

Making excuses to go the bathroom after meals.
Sneaking food.
Eating large amounts of food on the spur of the moment.
Taking laxatives, vomiting, and/or over exercising to "purge" food.
May have swelling around jaw area, blood shot eyes, dental problems.
Unexplained disappearance of food.
Mood swings.

Most of the time when girls get this disease it is because they look at themselves in the mirror and see someone they don't like. Parents will say they are getting a tummy and so they feel they have to fit into society and be the model figure when they are perfect the way they are.

PARTIAL SOLUTIONS
There are not many solutions to having an eating disorder. The first step to a solution is recognition. You have to realize that you have a problem. If you notice your friends or family members have a problem talk to somebody. Do not confront them about the problem until you are completely sure they have one. It is best to talk to a doctor about it and find more information on these diseases and a good way to confront your friends or family.
